The Vacant Homes Action Plan, published in January 2023, sets out the various actions being pursued to return vacant properties back into use as homes. In March, I published the 2025 Progress Report which shows the significant progress that is being made and it is available on my Department's website at the following link: .
A key action in the plan was the launch of the CPO Activation Programme by my Department in April 2023. This programme requires local authorities to take a proactive, systematic approach to identifying and activating vacant and derelict properties. It includes use of their compulsory purchase powers under the Derelict Sites Act and the Housing Act, when engagement with the owners of these properties is not successful in bringing them back into use. Guidance and support are provided by the Department and the Housing Agency to the local authorities in implementing the Programme.
I understand that Kildare County Council has compulsorily purchased several properties on Basin Street, Naas and that the sites in question are currently intended for the future development of social housing. I am informed that Kildare County Council is actively proceeding with development of design proposals. This aligns with the Council’s ongoing commitment to addressing housing needs within the county.
