As the Deputy will be aware, my Department’s Budget currently stands at over €12.2 billion for 2025. This represents a significant investment in our education system and in our children and young people with an increase of more than €3.5 billion or 40% in the last 5 years. In the 2024/2025 school year, over 552,000 students are enrolled in primary schools and more than 425,000 in post-primary schools with the Departments funding being allocated under the following broad expenditure categories: Pay and Pensions (c.75%), Capital Projects (c.13%), Financial Grants to Schools (c.6%), School Transport (c.3%), and a range of other expenditure areas (c.3%).

Budget 2025 provided for an increase of €717 million in core current funding and over €661 million in core capital funding to my Department’s Vote. In addition, €120 million was pre-funded for Cost of Living supports and €141 million was allocated for supports related to Ukraine expenditure. These additional funds build on significant increases in recent budgets and further enhance the investment in Ireland’s primary and post-primary education system. The significant increased investment is the largest Education budget in the history of the state and reflects the government’s commitment to a quality inclusive school system and improved learning outcomes for every student.

The allocation of funding and recording of expenditure for my Department is not done at a county level basis. I am, therefore, not in a position to provide specific details on the amounts paid to Co. Louth.
