Public services are provided through a mix of both public service and non-public service workforce. All public service employees have access to a public service pension scheme. Pension arrangements for non-public service employees are a matter for their respective employers. This Department would not have information in relation to the pension provisions for non-public service employees.
My Department is responsible for the administration of the civil service pension schemes, which cover members of both established and unestablished civil service and State industrial pension schemes.
Across the broader public service, the authorities responsible for administering the various pension schemes are, in general, the relevant employers and Ministers within each sector. It is therefore a matter for those sectoral authorities, including the relevant Ministers, to provide any available information regarding the number of individuals who are members of public service pension schemes, or who are in receipt of pensions from their respective schemes.
As of the end of Quarter 2, 2025, there were 412,515 public service employees.
