I am informed by the Public Appointments Service (publicjobs), the centralised provider of recruitment and selection services for the Civil and Public Service and a body under the aegis of my Department, that the most recent Clerical Officer in the Civil Service (Fluent Irish) campaign was launched in April 2025.

Of 99 applicants, 60 attended interview and 54 were successful and placed on panels across Galway, Dublin and Limerick. These candidates will be assigned to roles in order of merit as vacancies arise.

My Department does not maintain a central record of staff vacancies. Delegated sanction was introduced by Government in 2015 to provide Offices and Departments with flexibility to manage identified business needs subject to remaining within overall pay ceilings.

Delegated sanction allows Departments to fill vacancies through recruitment or promotion in designated grades up to and including Principal Officer (PO) standard or equivalent. In October 2024, the policy was revised to extend this flexibility to previously sanctioned posts at Principal Officer higher level, equivalent grades, and Assistant Secretary level—on the condition that there is no change to the job specification or the terms and conditions of the post.

Any new posts at these levels, or changes to the job specification or terms and conditions of previously sanctioned posts, continue to require the prior, explicit approval of the Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure Public Service Reform and Digitalisation.
