As the world’s sixth largest economy and our closest neighbour, the UK continues to be a crucial market for Irish companies. Total trade in goods and services between the UK and Ireland was over €124 billion euro in 2023 – the latest year with both good and services data available. Cross border trade with Northern Ireland also continues to thrive. InterTradeIreland regularly publishes trade statistics on its website, demonstrating steady increases in trade volumes since 2020.On 25 August 2025, Government published a new Action Plan on Market Diversification. It provides a clear roadmap for a ‘whole of government’ approach to enhance Ireland’s economic and trading relationships. The Plan will support the goal of securing high-level market access for companies based in Ireland who are aiming to grow business overseas and increase domestic employment. The UK market, bolstered by the ambition set out in the recent UK-Ireland 2030 Joint Statement and EU-UK agreements, will continue to be a key market in this regard.
