The Central Statistics Office (CSO) collects data on the expenditure by tourists in Ireland through two surveys. The Household Travel Survey collects data from Irish residents travelling in Ireland (domestic tourism) while the Passenger Survey collects data from overseas residents (inbound tourism).

The table below shows the total estimated expenditure, based on reported spend by survey participants, by domestic and inbound tourists. Fares for travelling to or from Ireland are excluded from the expenditure estimates for overseas visitors.

Figures do not include expenditure data on tourism in Ireland either by residents of Northern Ireland or by overseas visitors who leave via the airports or seaports of Northern Ireland as these data are not available. Inbound expenditure does not include same day visits by overseas residents.

Figures included in the table are expressed in millions of euro and span for 2020 to 2024. Data on expenditure in respect of inbound tourism is not available for 2020-2022 due to COVID restrictions and methodological changes in Inbound Tourism data collection.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) collects data on visits to Ireland by overseas residents in the Passenger Survey.

The Passenger Survey was introduced at Ireland’s air and seaports for the first time in late 2022, therefore data for 2022 is not available.

Due to COVID restrictions data is also not available for the period 2020-2021.
