393. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the regulations in place that set the national standards for pedestrian crossings; if any of these standards could preclude the design of pedestrian crossings whereby crossings are painted in the pride colours; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, I wish to inform the Deputy that the design requirements for pedestrian crossings are set out in Regulation 42 of the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 2024 (SI 200/2024).
There is no statutory basis for rainbow pedestrian crossings in Ireland. These crossings, which cannot be legally enforced by An Garda Síochána, operate solely on a courtesy basis and are installed at the discretion of individual local authorities. Responsibility for their upkeep and maintenance lies with the relevant local authority and the Department of Transport has no formal role in this regard.
