At the outset, I wish to reassure the Deputy that the safety and security of Irish personnel serving in UNIFIL remains of paramount importance to myself and to Government and is central to the planning and execution of all operations and movements in the UNIFIL Mission Area. The Defence Forces utilise a dynamic and iterative threat assessment process which examines and analyses the operating environment, and the wider security situation in the country and the region. This threat assessment remains under constant review, subject to amendment as the situation dictates and forms a central part of the planning process for all Defence Forces operations in UNIFIL. The force protection posture and the military capabilities deployed to implement the mandate are shaped and driven by this threat assessment. The deployed personnel remain in constant contact with Defence Forces Headquarters and provide formal reports and briefs on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. I further wish to reassure the Deputy that both I and my Department remain in regular contact with the Chief of Staff with regard to the deployment of our personnel deployed in UNIFIL.
