In alignment with the commitment in the Programme for Government, the Department of Health is tasked with exploring ways to ban commercial sunbed use in Ireland. To advance this commitment, Minister of State Jennifer Murnane O’Connor has established a Cross-Departmental Working Group.
This Group will assess the feasibility and implications of a ban, evaluating public health, economic, and regulatory considerations and provide evidence-based recommendations to the Minister.
A public consultation has recently been launched by the Minister of State Jennifer Murnane O’Connor which is open to both members of the public and the sunbed industry. This public consultation will inform the evidence-based recommendations which will be made to the Minister of State towards the end of the year. It is important to note that any potential ban on commercial sunbed use will not include phototherapy provided under the supervision or direction of a relevant medical practitioner in a healthcare establishment.
