The Programme for Government commits to developing a successor to the existing National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026.
Consideration for the future direction of maternity service development will require an extensive evidence base, of which a review of the implementation of the current National Maternity Strategy will form part.
At the start of 2025, 95% of actions of the current Strategy were either implemented or in progress. New development funding of €2 million (€4 million full year cost) is driving continued implementation of the Strategy in 2025. The Department of Health and the HSE are currently assessing the outstanding actions of the current Strategy in preparation for 2026.
