Under the Global Ireland 2025 Strategy, there has been an unprecedented expansion of Ireland’s global diplomatic and economic footprint. This has helped us ensure that the country has been well-positioned to weather the increasingly turbulent global environment of recent years, including the consequences of Brexit, the COVID pandemic, the energy and related inflation crisis, and the consequences of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
As the Strategy is in its final year, my Department is coordinating a final review of its implementation and impact. This exercise will involve all relevant Departments and agencies so we can capture all important lessons. This review will be an important input into the formulation of the new Global Ireland 2040 Strategy.
As outlined in the Programme for Government, the new Strategy will outline an over-arching masterplan for further enhancing our place and influence in international affairs, including ever deeper relationships with our European partners in the period ahead.
It will draw on lessons from implementation of Global Ireland 2025 and will reflect the changed international context and the new challenges and opportunities facing us as we look to the next chapter in our Global Ireland ambition.
