1829. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection for a review of how social welfare repayment statements are issued out to individuals; currently if more than one overpayment then the repayment is only reflected on one account, which causes confusion for the individuals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department’s current debt management system is designed to send an automatic yearly statement on the anniversary of each individual overpayment. With over 200,000 customers with overpayments, this approach ensures that statements are distributed consistently throughout the year and avoids a surge of letters being sent at the same time, for example in January for the previous year.
It is recognized that customers with a number of overpayments may receive more than one statement. However, it should be noted that almost 85% of customers only have a single overpayment.
My Department is examining an IT system development to facilitate one consolidated statement in cases where there are more than one overpayment.
