The provision of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in workplaces to assist in the prevention of sudden cardiac death is an important aspect of modern occupational first aid.
Currently, almost all Intreo offices have a defibrillator in the building. My Department's Facilities Management Unit are currently progressing a tender for the supply, upgrade and maintenance of defibrillators across the country. The Department will continue the roll out of defibrillators to ensure that there is one in every public building.
Currently there are 448 certified First Aiders in the Department, who are trained in the use of AED's. There is a continuous process in place for the recruitment, training and re-certification of First Aiders to ensure that trained personnel are equipped to respond effectively in emergency situations.
My Department's team of Regional Safety Advisers conduct annual Health and Safety Audits to ensure that both the availability of safety equipment and the number of trained personnel remain at appropriate levels.
I trust this information clarifies the matter for the Deputy.
