Radon gas is recognised as a serious threat to public health and is estimated to be responsible for approximately 350 cases of lung cancer annually in Ireland. In response to the public health risks posed by radon gas, the Government established a National Radon Control Strategy (NRCS). Implementation of the Strategy is overseen by an interdepartmental and agency NRCS Coordination Group chaired by my Department. The NRCS Coordination Group last met in June 2025.
Testing homes for radon is a matter for the householder. As every home has different amounts of radon, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that everyone has their home tested for radon.
Detailed information in relation to radon, including a list of registered radon testing services, can be found at www.radon.ie. Each of the listed services have met the relevant criteria required to become a registered radon testing service. Homeowners can purchase radon testing kits directly from one of the registered companies.
