I propose to take Questions Nos. 1476 and 1489 together.
My Department provides support for historic thatched buildings principally through the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS). The BHIS is a grant scheme that seeks to help the owners and custodians of historic buildings to maintain and conserve these important structures. Owners of historic thatched buildings may apply to the BHIS for support for a variety of conservation works, including re-thatching.
The BHIS is funded through my Department's National Built Heritage Service and administered in the main by the local authorities. A total of approximately €1.25m was awarded to thatched buildings under the BHIS in 2025.
The window for applications for BHIS funding for 2026 is expected to open in the coming weeks. Applications must be made to the relevant local authority, in this case South Dublin County Council. It is advised that the owner of the building in question should contact the Architectural Conservation Officer within the council for further advice and assistance.
