154. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government further to the NDP review and the announcement of €3.5 billion of an equity investment in ESB and EirGrid, the level of equity this investment will equate to in both ESB and EirGrid, respectively; to provide a breakdown of the equity the Government of Ireland has in both EirGrid and ESB as the TSO and DSO, respectively, and the way this ownership stake will be impacted by the new investment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 154 and 233 together.

Government has approved equity support of up to €1.5bn for ESB and up to €2bn for EirGrid to support their investment in critical energy infrastructure over the coming years. Government currently owns 100% of the shareholding in EirGrid and will continue to do so after the equity support is provided. Government currently owns 97.15% of the shareholding in ESB and the ESOP (Employee Share Ownership Plan) owns the remaining 2.85%. There will be no other owners of shares in ESB as a result of this equity injection. The specific mechanism by which Government will provide the equity will require extensive further financial, legal and regulatory review in the coming months.
