The CSO publishes annual estimates of migration in its Population and Migration Estimates publication. The principal source of information for the estimation of the gross annual migration flows is the Irish Labour Force Survey (LFS), which also provides the basis for the classification of the flows by sex, age group, origin/destination and citizenship. The latest published figures are for April 2024 and the following table shows the number of emigrants estimated to be Irish citizens starting with the 12-month period to April 2015 and ending with the 12-month period to April 2024.

Estimated Emigration by Citizenship in the 12 months to April

Irish Citizens All Citizens
(thousand) (thousand)
2015 42.5 70
2016 37.1 66.2
2017 24.7 56.1
2018 25 51.6
2019 27.2 53.1
2020 25 50.9
2021 21.4 52.3
2022 25.6 56.1

The Central Statistics Office cannot answer this question as we do not have the information requested. The data used to compile Population and Migration Estimates does not differentiate between new inward migrants and returning migrants, and does not give country of nationality.

The Central Statistics Office is developing new methodologies to examine these questions (migration type and nationality) for Migration Estimates such as those recently published in “A Review of Migration Indicators, Q3 2022 to Q2 2024" but these are developmental only.
