1021. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the reason there is no compulsory standardised test for Irish in T2 primary schools, as currently there is no national baseline for pupils in English-medium schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [40992/25]

Standardised tests are one of a number of assessment approaches that primary schools can use to assess children’s progress in Irish. The Educational Research Centre has prioritised the update of standardised testing requirements at primary level. This includes the redevelopment and standardisation of listening and reading tests in Irish to support learner progress in both English and Irish-medium schools. It is intended that the updated tests will be available early in 2028. Consideration will be given, in consultation with relevant stakeholders and in accordance with the research on effective practice, on the question of mandatory testing in Irish for English-medium schools once the updated standardised tests in Irish are developed.
