Under our Global Ireland 2025 Strategy, Ireland opened its resident Embassy in Wellington in 2018, in the same year in which New Zealand established its resident Embassy in Dublin. The Embassy in Wellington, under current Ambassador Jane Connolly, is performing very effectively in promoting relations between the two countries as well as providing support to Irish citizens in New Zealand. In this task, the Embassy is being ably supported by our Honorary Consul General in Auckland, Niamh McMahon. There are no plans at present to open a Consulate General in Auckland, New Zealand.

The scope of our diplomatic network is kept under constant review within Government, under the direction of my Department. Under Global Ireland 2025, the goal of establishing 26 new Missions will be accomplished early next year with the opening of our latest Mission, the Consulate General in Melbourne, Australia. Consideration will be given to a successor strategy, once a formal review of Global Ireland 2025 is undertaken.
