The provision of consular assistance to Irish citizens is a cornerstone of the work of my Department. DFAT officials, including in our Embassies and Consulates in the United States, place a strong emphasis on ensuring that Irish citizens receive timely and empathetic consular assistance.

While I would note that United States immigration policy, and the application of that policy in the US is solely a matter for the US authorities, where an Irish citizen is detained or facing deportation, they can be provided consular assistance in accordance with the Department’s Consular Assistance Charter.

The Department and our Embassy in Washington continues efforts to secure legal pathways for Irish people seeking to live and work in the US. This remains a priority for me and for the Government.
