As Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, I can confirm that any vehicle registered and operated on Irish roads must comply with EU type-approval standards, as outlined in Regulation (EU) 2018/858. This includes all mechanically propelled vehicles, including sports utility vehicles (SUVs), provided they meet the required standards.
The current Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations, as amended, extend powers to local authorities to restrict access to certain roads on the basis of vehicle weight. I can confirm, however, that my Department has no current plans to introduce equivalent restrictions specific to the use of SUVs.
