Ireland’s National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP) was launched in 2016 and sought to increase physical activity levels across the population.

An independent review of the NPAP was conducted in 2021 and it found the majority of its actions had either been fully or partially completed. The review also made a series of recommendations to further enhance the promotion of physical activity which have been incorporated into a successor National Physical Activity Framework.

It is anticipated that the NPAF will be jointly brought to Government by the Ministers for Health and Culture, Communications and Sport for approval in the coming months.

Sport Ireland is the statutory body responsible for the development of sport in Ireland, including in relation to participation and the development of its National Sports Campus.

Sport Ireland works in partnership with the National Governing Body (NGB) for Ice Hockey in Ireland, the Irish Ice Hockey Association (IIHA) and is committed to supporting the long-term strategic development of the sport in Ireland

In 2021, Sport Ireland conducted a feasibility study on the development of a permanent ice rink facility as part of their Sports Campus Masterplan Vision. Sport Ireland do not currently view the development of an ice rink at its National Sports Campus to be a priority project.
