The Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme was launched in October 2021 to improve the long-term health and wellbeing of the most disadvantaged communities in Ireland. The programme takes a placed based approach to tackling health inequalities with a focus on the determinants of health. 19 areas, in 14 different Local Authorities, were selected using the HP deprivation index. Some of these areas are located in major cities, whilst others are in rural towns and areas. The communities identified have on average 24,000 people and a broad mix of population types.

Funding from the Department of Health has been given to the relevant 14 Local Authorities to cover the salaries of a Local Development Officer and annual seed funding of 75k. Since it’s 2021, over 300 projects have been implemented in the 19 areas which have helped improve the physical, mental and social wellbeing of it’s community.

Please see below a table with the amount of funding given to each Local Authority.

The EU4Health funding programme only started in 2021 and will run until 2027.

Funding data is not provided on a county basis. Most of the funding goes to national health agencies or government departments, and therefore cannot be categorised per counties. These are included in the "national" category below. Where possible, we have matched counties/regions with the rest of grants awarded to Irish participants, as summarised below in Table 1.

The procurement data is provided in a separate table (Table 2). It is not possible to determine the amount of funding dedicated to the Irish partners on procurement actions. We have therefore listed the full contracted amount and the Irish Organisations involved (and start date)

To note:

  • The data related to the amounts are not actual costs but are taken from the grant agreement
  • There are five projects from the EU4Health Work Programme 2024 with 13 Irish participants that are in Grant Agreement Preparation and not signed yet (not included in the above).
  • The 2025 Work Programme has not yet been approved, therefore there is no drawdown to report.

If the Deputy wants information on the previous funding programmes, i.e. prior to EU4Health, my Department can provide some information on it. The level of funding was much lower.
