The HSE has advised that endometriosis is one of the most common gynaecological conditions and is estimated to affect approximately 1 in 10 women worldwide.
The exact prevalence of endometriosis in Ireland is difficult to ascertain.
It is recognised that endometriosis is a significant health issue for women in Ireland today and the HSE acknowledges that it is a difficult condition to diagnose and treat because of the variation of presentations which can impact the physical and mental wellbeing of patients.
Work is underway to improve services in this area. The Programme for Government commits to continue to expand endometriosis specialist services. Endometriosis has been recognised as a priority workstream on evolving women’s health support services and is included in the Women's Health Action Plan 2024-2025.
