The Office of Public Works (OPW) is committed to enhancing the visitor experience at our national heritage sites, and Trim Castle, as one of Ireland’s most significant medieval landmarks, is a key priority in this regard.
The development of a new Visitor Experience Centre at Trim Castle is part of a broader strategy to improve access, interpretation, and engagement at the site. The proposed centre will provide state-of-the-art facilities for visitors, including interactive exhibits, educational resources, and enhanced accessibility features, embedding Trim Castle as a focal point for heritage and tourism in the region.
Funding for the project to planning stage was awarded under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund reflecting the Government’s commitment to investing in our cultural heritage and tourism infrastructure. The OPW is working closely with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and Meath County Council to ensure the project delivers maximum benefit to both visitors and the local community.
A Part 8 Planning order for the works was granted on the 8th February 2024 by Meath County Council. The OPW is prioritising this project and continues to make very good progress with the project currently in the detailed design phase. It is, currently, anticipated that the construction phase will commence in the second half of 2026 and the construction period will be 24 months.
In conclusion, the proposed Visitor Experience Centre at Trim Castle represents a significant investment in our national heritage and tourism infrastructure. It will not only enhance the visitor experience but also contribute to the economic and cultural vitality of the region. I look forward to providing further updates as the project progresses.
