The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage is the lead Department for severe weather emergencies. My Department has an important role to play in assisting households in the immediate aftermath of emergency weather events under the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme.
The purpose of the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme is to provide financial support to people whose homes are damaged and who are not able to meet costs for essential needs, household items and, in some instances, structural repair.
The Programme for Government includes a commitment to develop an “Extreme Weather Event Assistance Scheme for homes, community organisations, farmers and businesses”. My Department will provide critical input toward the enhancement of a whole of Government response for future extreme weather events.
I trust this clarifies the matter for the Deputy.
