Regional development is a key focus of our Programme for Government and is central to the work of my Department and our Agencies. In that regard, regional development is a strategic imperative for the IDA who partners with client companies and key stakeholders in all regions in pursuit of its objective to maximise regional opportunities.

A total number of 973 investments were won by IDA during the lifetime of its 2021-2024 strategy (Driving Recovery and Sustainable Growth), 54% of which went to regional locations. In 2024, 137 of a total of 234 investments, 59% , were outside Dublin. IDA Ireland’s regional strategy has a proven track record of success, and the agency is committed to building on this in the years ahead.

Table 1 below provides a breakdown of regional targets for each region over the period of IDA Ireland's last IDA strategy, 2021 - 2024, together with the total number of client investments by region between 2021 and 2024 and for 2024.

Under its new Strategy “Adapt Intelligently: A Strategy for Sustainable Growth and Innovation 2025-29", launched in February 2025, IDA Ireland will target 1,000 investments, with 550 in regional locations outside Dublin. This ambitious target reflects IDA Ireland’s ongoing commitment to support transformation and growth across all regions. IDA Ireland reports on annual performance in December each year.

Table 2 below provides a breakdown of regional investments that IDA Ireland have committed too over the period 2025 – 2029.

IDA Ireland client Investments provide only one indicator of the level of FDI activity in a region. Other indicators of the impact of FDI in a region include the number of client companies; the level of direct and indirect employment generated; the economic impact of IDA client companies in a region through payroll, and purchase of Irish goods and services; site visits to a region; longevity of client company operations, companies commitment to continued transformation, and to the community they are located in.

Table 3 below provides a breakdown of IDA supported FDI client companies and the associated employment by region for 2024.
