The Defence Vote Group, comprising of two Votes, Army Pensions (Vote 35) and Defence (Vote 36), was provided with a funding allocation of €1,350 million in Budget 2025. Of this overall allocation, €1,135 million relates to current expenditure, with €215 million relating to capital expenditure.
Current expenditure on the Defence Vote Group provides mainly for the pay and allowances of up to 8,960 public service employees, essential and ongoing Defence Forces standing and operational costs and funding for up to 13,600 Army Pensioners and certain dependants.
Capital spending on the Defence Vote Group is primarily directed at providing sufficient military capabilities, across land, air, maritime and cyber domains, to meet specific roles assigned to the Defence Forces.
The table below outlines the overall capital and current funding allocation for both 2024 and 2025 along with the relevant spend to end June in both years.
