To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade the details for the past three years and the current year funding allocated or paid out for Departmental employees for legal study programmes including EU law in the past three years, detailing the course title, the course provider, the course fees, grade of employee supported, whether course was in person or online and name of the scheme providing the support; if employees received any other supports such as time off; if so, the details of same, in tabular form; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade recognises the importance of supporting colleagues to advance on their learning goals relevant to their role and to the wider work of the Department. We support colleagues in our Legal Division and across the Department to further their legal knowledge particularly in areas including Irish, EU, international and employment law. 

Between June 2022 and June 2025, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade supported eleven legal study programmes, which led to a third level educational, professional or vocational qualification and which were provided by a recognised educational institution or professional body.

The table below sets out details on the legal programmes pursued, the amount of financial support provided by the Department during the period concerned, the grade of officers supported and whether the course was conducted online, in person or through a hybrid approach of both.

As part of the Department's Refund of Fees scheme, officers are entitled to five days study leave in each year prior to their final year. In the final year of their course, officers are entitled to ten days study leave. Officers are also allowed leave to sit exams if necessary.
