On 2 July I had the honour of hosting the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Judge Tomoko Akane, during her visit to Dublin. Our meeting provided the opportunity to reiterate Ireland’s steadfast support for the ICC at a time when international justice and the rule of law are coming under increasing pressure. We discussed how to best protect the ICC as it faced numerous threats, including US sanctions, Russian arrest warrants against ICC judges and recent cyber-attacks. Judge Akane thanked Ireland for its strong commitment to the Court, in particular its additional financial and practical support.
During her visit Judge Akane also had the opportunity to meet and exchange views with the Chief Justice, Mr. Justice Donal O’Donnell, and other senior members of the judiciary, the Attorney General, Mr. Rossa Fanning SC and the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms. Catherine Pierse.
