11. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if consideration has been given to extend the 22.25 train from Galway to Athlone, which currently only operates Monday to Friday to include weekends or to provide any other late night train service (details supplied); if and when the National Transport Authority will address this gap in evening and weekend public transport provision; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport; however, I am not involved in the day-to-day operations of public transport. The National Transport Authority (NTA) has responsibility for organisation of public transport services provided under public service obligation (PSO) contracts.

The issue raised by the Deputy is a matter for Irish Rail, in conjunction with the NTA. Therefore, I have referred the Deputy's question to Irish Rail and the NTA for direct response.

Please advise my private office if you do not receive a reply within ten working days.
