The Teaching Council registers teachers under the Teaching Council Act 2001-2015 and in line with the regulations at: www.teachingcouncil.ie/en/publications/registration/revised-teaching-council-registration-regulations-2016.pdf

Under the Teaching Council Acts 2001-2015 the Teaching Council is the body with the statutory authority and responsibility for the regulation of the teaching profession in Ireland including the registration of teachers in the State.

While the Department does not currently collect data on the number of STEM teachers in employment in schools it is the Department's intention to continue to undertake further analysis of data relating to the school workforce. In the interim the Department relies on Teaching Council data relating to the number of teachers registered to teach each STEM subject.

Such numbers currently stand at:

Subject Number registered
Physics 1534
Chemistry 2753
Engineering 963
Computer Science 155
Biology 5287
Mathematics 7527
Applied Mathematics 605
