Endometriosis is one of the most common gynaecological conditions in Ireland and affects approximately 1 in 10 women worldwide. It can be a difficult condition to diagnose and treat because of the variation of presentation, impacting the physical and mental well-being of patients at varying levels.
The National Framework for Endometriosis is being developed by the HSE’s National Women & Infant’s Health Programme (NWIHP) in conjunction with endometriosis specialists and gynaecologists, and in consultation with stakeholders, including the Irish Council for General Practitioners. The Framework identifies how care for women with endometriosis will be delivered from primary care to local hospital care to specialist complex care by multidisciplinary teams.
The HSE has advised that this Framework is nearing completion. The Framework will be published when final agreement between the IMO, representing GPs, and the HSE, on the role played by GPs in implementing the model of care is reached.
