78. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills her views on whether an organisation in receipt of State funding (details supplied) should provide an apology to the mother of a girl who died in their care, in circumstances in which as a result of a civil action, the organisation admitted liability. I extend my sincere sympathies to the family of the young girl whose life was lost in this terrible incident. I recognise their loss and the terrible trauma that they now carry.

As the Deputy has noted, the events leading to this tragic death have been the subject of court proceedings, leading to a settlement by the youth organisation in question.

The youth organisation is an independent organisation governed by an independent Board of Directors. While it receives some of its funding from the Department of Education and Youth, it receives other funding through membership and fundraising. It is a matter for the organisation in question to determine its own course of action in this regard.
