The forthcoming National Disability Strategy will include employment as an important consideration as one of its five key pillars. The strategy will contain a number of actions for my department, including engagement with employers and employer bodies to raise awareness and to foster positive attitudes towards the employment of people with disabilities.
The Department of Social Protection has a broad range of schemes in place, such as Work and Access and the Wage Subsidy Scheme, that aim to support both employers and disabled people.
The enterprise agencies of my Department also operate a number of initiatives to support the employment of people with a disability. The Local Enterprise Offices offer tailored supports for persons with disabilities to support entrepreneurship opportunities. In addition, Open Door Mentoring by Enterprise Ireland provides entrepreneurial, mentoring and capability supports to all emerging entrepreneurs, including those with a disability. IDA Ireland also connects client companies with under-represented potential employees, including those with disabilities.
