In line with the Blended Working Policy Framework for Civil Service Organisations, my Department launched its Blended Working Policy in late October 2022. Staff availing of blended working are required to attend the office on a minimum of 2 specific days each week as agreed with their manager. Employees can apply to avail of blended working through the centralised online application system facilitated by the National Shared Services Organisation (NSSO) for up to three days remote working each week. Due to the business requirements and nature of work in a small number of areas within my Department, working from home is only feasible one day per week. There is no provision to work remotely on a full time basis. There is no obligation on employees to avail of blended working if they do not wish to do so. The details of full time equivalents in the table below reflects employees availing of reduced pattern employment through schemes such as worksharing and shorter working year.

There are three bodies under the aegis of my Department; the Army Pensions Board, established under the Army Pensions Act 1927, the Ombudsman for the Defence Forces, established pursuant to the provisions of the Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Act 2004 and the External Oversight Body of the Defence Forces (EOB), which was placed on a Statutory basis on 1 December 2024. The civil servants supporting the administration of those bodies are included in the numbers set out below.

The table below sets out the number of staff in my Department for the years 2022 to date in 2025.

Year No. of staff Full time equivalent (FTE)
2022 399 385.04
2023 418 401.5
2024 458 441.3
2025 487 470.7
