Within the meaning of the Universities Act 1997, the Institutions of Technology Acts 1992 to 2006 and the Technological Universities Act 2018, higher education institutions (HEIs) in Ireland are autonomous bodies.

As such, institutions are academically independent and are entitled to regulate their own internal affairs, including their engagements with different companies and institutions.

As Minister, it would not be appropriate for me to intervene in these relationships.

The official Irish language version of the placename for the town referred to by the Deputy is the subject of a comprehensive report that I have received from An Coiste Logainmneacha – the statutory committee of experts appointed to advise me on Irish language placenames. This report has been prepared following representations made to my Department initially from the local Tidy Towns group.

I am currently considering the issues concerned and intend to make a decision in the near future on whether any change needs to be made to the current official placename.
