535. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government further to Parliamentary Question No. 823 of 30 May 2025, if he will advise on a timeline for the required investigative works (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [32700/25]

As this is a complicated process dependent on the outcome of investigations, it is not possible to provide a timeframe at this stage. The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) of my Department is endeavouring to progress this issue as soon as possible, and tenders have issued for assistance in conducting the required testing/investigations.
The results of these investigations will determine the appropriate methodology to remove the silt/soil and what compliant methodologies are available for the disposal/processing of the removed soil. In order to meet the requirements of the Habitats Directive, and relevant regulations for works within an SAC, appropriate screening, permissions and licences will need to be obtained in order to progress these works.
In the meantime, I can confirm that, while it is not a long term solution, the NPWS has again cleared an entrance/exit route at the Bunrower end of the canal last month and this will allow for continued boat access to the canal while a longer term solution is put in place.
