Local authorities are responsible for the identification of the social housing need in their area. Local authorities are best placed to make decisions on potential sites for development and therefore it is a matter for individual local authorities to identify suitable sites in line with local circumstances and their social housing development policy.
Through the supports made available from my Department, funding is available to deliver additional social housing stock through a range of initiatives, including, where appropriate, the acquisition of sites.
Kerry County Council advised my Department that they are currently preparing documents to go to tender for the appointment of consultants to look at the feasibility of potential uses for Coastguard cottages in Valentia Island in conjunction with the OPW.
My Department is not aware of any funding submission for social or affordable housing on the site mentioned.
