The purpose of the Summer Works Scheme is to devolve funding to individual school authorities to undertake small-scale building works which, ideally, can be carried out during the summer months or at other times that avoid disrupting the operation of the school. The Summer Works Scheme plays an important role in the maintenance and upgrade of the condition of our schools. It provides important opportunities for enhancing the facilities in a school such as upgrading science laboratories and enhancing the energy efficiency of schools through upgrade works to roofs, windows, heating systems etc.

The project mentioned by the Deputy for a Summer Works (SWS) roof repairs project at Gorey Community School, Esmonde Street, Co Wexford RN 91492N has been under constant review by my Department. However, due to the complex nature of the project and the fact that the school is involved in a number of competing projects, such as a proposed extension to the school which would undo works undertaken by SWS roof if installed first, and the school has been selected for the Energy Retrofit Pathfinder Programme, my Department have been working with the school to prioritise the most urgent works.

As part of this ongoing engagement, officials from my Department held a meeting with the school principal on May 30th on the issue of exploring the possibility of the delivery of the roof project as part of the works taking place during the Pathfinder Programme. My officials are continuing to engage with the school in this regard.
