The Programme for Government 2025, Securing Ireland's Future, sets out a number of commitments relating to national security and defence, and work to give effect to these is well underway.

The establishment of a Ministerial Council on National Security is a key commitment in the Programme for Government and it will function to enhance central co-ordination on strategic national security matters. The Ministerial Council membership comprises the Taoiseach as chair, the Tánaiste and the Minister for Justice. Meetings of the Council are also attended by the Secretaries General of the relevant Government Departments, the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána, the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces and the Director of the National Cyber Security Centre, and the Chiefs of Staff to the Taoiseach and Tánaiste.

I chaired the first meeting of the new Council on 21 May 2025.

The Ministerial Council will meet again after the summer.
