I can advise the Deputy, the Temporary Protection Directive was extended until March 2026 at a meeting of the European Council in June 2024, thereby providing certainty for Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BoTP) who can continue to avail of the protections that the Directive provides during this time.
Consideration as to the arrangements to be put in place following the expiry of the Directive are ongoing, both within the Government and at an EU level. The Commission has published a proposal to extend the Temporary Protection Directive for a further 12 months until March 2027, as well as a proposal for a Council Recommendation on the transition out of temporary protection. These proposals will now be the subject of consideration and discussion between Member States.
The Deputy will appreciate that I cannot pre-empt the outcome of these discussions and the decisions of either the EU or the Government in this regard.
BoTPs hold temporary permission to remain in Ireland, which is renewable on an annual basis, as long as the Directive remains in force.
