The Defence Forces advertising budget is provided for within Subhead A.22.2 (Miscellaneous: Advertising) of the Defence Vote and provides for advertising costs which support various Defence Forces recruitment initiatives. The table below outlines the Subhead A.22.2 allocation over the period specified.

Subhead A.22.2 Defence Forces Advertising Allocation €m
2023 €1.0
2024 €2.4
2025 €3.1
This allocation has increased over recent years and has enabled an enhanced Defence Forces recruitment effort across a broad demographic using various marketing and media platforms. This approach has enabled considerable progress on a wide number of ongoing recruitment initiatives, including general service recruitment, direct entry recruitment and re-entry recruitment schemes, with 13,384 applications received across all Defence Forces recruitment competitions in 2024 alone.

Investment in new equipment for the Defence Forces is provided for under various Subheads of the Defence Vote relating to defensive equipment, mechanical transport, aircraft, ships and naval stores, engineering, communications and information technology equipment etc.

I am informed by the Defence Forces that their records indicate the amount spent on purchasing military equipment from companies based in the Germany in 2023, 2024 and to date in 2025 was as follows:

Year Amount
2023 €2,868,370
2024 €1,119,271
2025 (up to 31 May) €183,837
I would also like to advise the Deputy that details of Purchase Orders for goods and services valued at more than €20,000 are routinely published.. This information is published on the Department of Defence website – https://www.gov.ie/en/collection/b61276-purchase-orders-over-20000/

The Department has published details of Purchase Orders including those placed for weapons and equipment by the Defence Organisation for the years 2023 to the first quarter of 2025. I am advised that a small number of Purchase Orders for that timeframe were excluded from the published list for security and operational reasons.
