I am advised that the Garda Commissioner previously authorised a number of CCTV cameras in Killarney in 2017. However, the Garda National Community Engagement Bureau does not currently have an ongoing application for a Community Based CCTV for Killarney.

Since 2017 my Department has administered a grant-aid scheme supporting groups wishing to establish a community-based CCTV system in their area.

To date, grants totalling over €950,000 have been approved for 36 Community CCTV schemes across the country.

A further €1 million in funding was made available towards the development of community-based CCTV schemes in 2024. Applications for funding are now open and can be made directly by the relevant Local Authorities.

Meanwhile it is open to groups to request their Local Authorities to apply for funding for schemes through this allocation.

Each application under the Community CCTV schemes is subject to robust assessment in line with the principles of necessity, proportionality and legality. The Garda National Community Engagement Bureau provides guidance and assistance in relation throughout this process.
