On 28 November 2023, Government approved, on an exceptional basis, funding of up to €15 million to be paid to the Trust, between 1 December 2023 and 31 March 2024 on a phased basis in order to ensure the continuation of the essential Homeless services being provided by the Peter McVerry Trust. The funding was provided subject to compliance with a range of conditions related to financial management and governance.
As a condition of the exceptional funding, the Trust undertook to work with local authorities in relation to all social housing and emergency homeless accommodation projects that had not yet advanced to ensure that all such proposals are advanced by the local authority, either directly or through engagement with other AHBs as appropriate.
All sites or properties that were purchased by the Peter McVerry Trust using public funding but not advanced at the time when the Trust ran into financial and governance problems are now proceeding to be developed as Social Housing or Emergency Accommodation by the relevant Local Authority (LA) or assigned Approved Housing Body (AHB). There are twenty such sites and properties across eleven LA areas and all twenty site/properties are being transferred to be developed by LAs or other AHBs. Given these sites are yet to be developed, the precise number of units they will deliver is not ascertainable at this time.
These sites are broken down by LA area as follows:
Local Authority | No. |
---|---|
Cork City | 1 |
Cork County | 1 |
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown | 1 |
Dublin City | 7 |
Fingal | 1 |
Galway County | 1 |
Limerick | 3 |
Louth | 1 |
Mayo | 1 |
Offaly | 1 |
South Dublin | 2 |
Total | 20 |
