The North-South Interconnector is an essential infrastructure project that will link the electricity transmission networks of Ireland and Northern Ireland — leading to a more secure, affordable and sustainable supply of electricity across the island.

As a transmission project, the North-South Interconnector is being undertaken by EirGrid, which is independent of the Minister, with EirGrid determining the means of delivery of the project, and in doing so, they seek to work in close collaboration with affected landowners and local communities. The Minister does not have a role in the delivery of electricity infrastructure on the ground and this is in line with the 2012 Government Policy Statement on the Strategic Importance of Transmission and Other Energy Infrastructure.

The Deputy has asked about meetings and or briefings I have received in respect of the North-South Interconnector. The most recent meeting was with the Deputy’s party colleague, Minster for the Economy, Caoimhe Archibald MLA, where Minister Archibald and I discussed the North-South Interconnector. Construction of this critical cross border project has commenced in Northern Ireland, and this is to be welcomed. Councils and communities in Ireland should continue to engage with EirGrid on progressing the project. As has been acknowledged by Minister Archibald’s predecessor, current Senator Murphy, the North-South Interconnector will bring benefits to the island of Ireland, including lower cost electricity, improved security of supply and greater investment in renewable electricity.

The briefing for my recent meeting was provided by officials from my Department, who have responsibility for policy related to the development of the electricity grid, and who brief me on grid related matters, including the North-South Interconnector, from time to time and as necessary.
