Ireland has made considerable progress in decarbonising our electricity sector over the last decade, largely due to the construction of renewable generation sources and their successful integration onto the electricity grid.

Ireland has over 7GW of renewable generation capacity. Wind, particularly onshore, remains our largest source of renewable electricity with over 5GW now installed. Solar generation is rapidly growing with over 1.5GW now installed, which is an significant increase on the previous year. Solar generation is highly complementary to wind generation and increased solar capacity will help Ireland to generate clean electricity all year round.

Data obtained from the published EirGrid System and Renewable Data Summary Report details the total wind generation and how that compares to demand. Please see below data for the last 5 years:

Year Total Wind Generation (GWh) - Ireland Renewable Electricity as % of demand
2020 11,070 42%
2021 9,507 35%
2022 10,879 39%
2023 11,398 41%
2024 11,129 40%
2025 ytd Apr 4,246 39%
