The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is the statutory body responsible for promoting compliance with, and enforcing, consumer protection and competition law in Ireland. Its mission is to make markets work better for consumers and businesses, with a vision of open and competitive markets where consumers are protected and businesses actively compete. The CCPC is independent in the performance of its statutory functions and I as Minister have no direct function in these matters.

The CCPC is an independent investigative and enforcement body for over 40 legislative instruments relating to competition and consumers, including product safety. However, the CCPC does not have a role in matters relating to the hosting of individuals’ or companies’ websites. These matters fall outside of its statutory remit.

My officials enquired with the Department of Arts, Media, Communication, Culture and Sport about the matter and were advised that Coimisiún na Meán is independent in the exercise of its functions.
