260. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade his response to the Israeli Defence Forces opening fire while Irish diplomats were present in the Jenin refugee camp; the steps he will take to ensure the safety of Irish diplomats from the Israeli defence forces; the response and sanctions he intends to levy against Israel in response; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I was shocked and appalled at reports that the IDF fired shots in the vicinity of a visit to Jenin last week by a group of diplomats, including two Irish diplomats based in Ramallah. Fortunately, no one was hurt. This is completely unacceptable and I condemn it in the strongest terms.

A senior official from my Department spoke with the Ambassador of Israel on the 21st of May to convey the Government’s concerns and condemnation of this incident in the strongest terms. Ireland has called on the Israeli authorities to provide a full explanation of what happened, with a full and thorough investigation. Those responsible must be held to account.

Israel is obliged to fully comply with international law, including with regard to the protection of diplomats.
