Addressing shortages in critical health and social care professions is a key priority for my Department and for the Government as a whole.
An interdepartmental working group was established in April 2025, chaired by my Department along with senior representatives from the Department of Health, the HSE, the Department of Children, Equality and Disability, the Higher Education Authority and the Department of Education and Youth.
This group is progressing work to expand student capacity in these critical therapy areas. The HEA has sought expressions of interest from Higher Education Institutions, to increase places in nine key disciplines as identified by the Department of Health. Options are being shortlisted for consideration and I will be discussing these matters at the forthcoming Cabinet Sub-Committee on Disabilities.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 716 to 719, inclusive, 722 and 723 together.
The student enrolment data requested by the Deputy regarding psychology, psychotherapy and counselling is contained in the attached spreadsheet. This data was sourced from the HEA Student Records System (SRS) and is the most recent available. Data is only available in relation to publicly-funded institutions. There are a significant number of courses in this area available through private providers and my Department does not have access to these.
The number of CAO places may fluctuate year on year for any given course, the new entrant data for undergraduate courses in the attached is reflective of the number of CAO places. Applications for post-graduate courses are not offered through the CAO.
The Department does not have the costing per student for all higher education programmes. The university sector collects full economic costing data. The full economic cost of each student enrolled as an undergraduate or postgraduate student will vary depending on the discipline.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 720 and 721 together.
The student enrolment data requested by the Deputy regarding paramedicine is contained in the attached spreadsheet. This data was sourced from the HEA Student Records System (SRS) and is the most recent available.
The number of CAO places may fluctuate year on year for any given course. In the case of paramedicine, many students access training through applying to the National Ambulance Service and not through the CAO.
The Department does not have the costing per student for all higher education programmes. The university sector collects full economic costing data. The full economic cost of each student enrolled as an undergraduate or postgraduate student will vary depending on the discipline.
